Johnson & Wales University (JWU), founded in 1914, is a nonprofit, private institution. A recognized leader in career education, it offers accredited degrees in business, hospitality, culinary arts, technology, and education to more than 16,000 graduate and undergraduate students, representing all 50 states and 96 countries. JWU has four campus locations in Providence, R.I.; North Miami, FL; Denver, CO; and Charlotte, N.C. Most students are recent graduates of high school business, college-preparatory, and vocational/technical programs. The academic focus of the university is on degree programs in culinary arts, food service, hospitality, technology, business administration, fashion merchandising, criminal justice, advertising and marketing. M.B.A. and doctorate degrees are also offered at the Providence campus.
JWU offers programs within an academic structure of three 11-week terms. The university's "upside-down" curriculum provides immediate concentration in the student's chosen major. Learning by doing is an important part of career training at JWU, and many programs include laboratory studies as well as formal internships or community service work requirements.
Popular majors offered at JWU's College of Business include: business administration, fashion merchandising and retail marketing, criminal justice, security management, advertising and marketing. At the College of Culinary Arts, students can major in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts and culinary nutrition. The Hospitality College offers majors in sports/entertainment/event management, hotel management and golf. Students interested in the technology industry, will find that at JWU's School of Technology they can major in electronic engineering and graphic design and digital media. Through our School of Arts & Sciences students can now enroll in our counseling psychology program.

Johnson & Wales University Encourages Community Service and Internships
Johnson & Wales University prepares students for success, both personal and professional. Its unique approach of combining academics and practical skills with relevant directed work experiences and community service work has made JWU a recognized leader in career education.
A major component of the student's education at JWU occurs through directed work experiences such as internships at all of its campuses in Providence, R.I.; North Miami, FL; Denver, CO; and Charlotte, N.C. These experiences are especially important in fields such as food service, hospitality, technology, advertising or business administration, and at JWU they can take the shape of formal internships, education programs for credit, community service learning and more. Work experience programs around the country and the world provide students with practical work experience for academic credit. Every year nearly 2,500 students participate in these programs, giving them valuable exposure to the world of marketing, advertising, criminal justice, hospitality, culinary arts and more, at more than 1,200 employer sites.
Each year, the JWU community performs more than 75,000 hours of community service work. Community Service-Learning (CSL) is an educational program that integrates community service work and academics. The service that students perform is tied to a particular course or internship, which furthers their learning by applying these skills in the real world and helps nonprofit agencies by providing targeted assistance.
JWU has long been recognized for its long-standing commitment to community service work at its campuses in Providence, R.I.; North Miami, FL; Denver, CO; and Charlotte, N.C. Additionally, for the past four years, all four JWU campuses have been named to the national President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, a federal initiative promoting the engagement of colleges and universities in their communities.
